Whatever amount of truth there is in the cliche of "getting in on the ground floor," Lovio George Communications + Design is doing it with its home in Midtown.
The boutique communications and design agency is about to celebrate its 31st birthday next month, and it has spent a vast majority of its time at its headquarters on West Forest Avenue. The company moved there in the 1980s, well before the Midtown brand was even a dream. It has since scored work with a number of major local organizations and some new ones, such as Shinola. Lovio George Communications + Design has helped the bicycle/watch-maker launch its Detroit store and the firm's Los Angeles and New York City stores.
"I don’t think anyone could have anticipated the success they have enjoyed," says John George, vice president & creative director of
Lovio George Communications + Design. "It's been great to be along for the ride."
Lovio George Communications + Design has pushed its revenue up 25 percent over the last year, largely thanks to an increased workload from its existing customer base. Those clients include The Parade Co. and the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy. That work has also helped the company grow its staff with three new hires over the last year. It now employs a dozen full-time workers and a number of part-time employees and independent contractors. It is also looking for an intern.
"We want to continue to spread the good word about Detroit," George says. "It's an exciting time to be in Detroit."
